CHAIRMAN JOHNSON STATEMENT ON PROPOSAL TO END SHUTDOWN

January 25, 2019

WASHINGTON – Republican Study Committee Chairman Mike Johnson (LA-04) released the following statement regarding President Trump's proposal to end the government shutdown:

"The situation at the southern border is a legitimate crisis, and Congress must act. Unfortunately, throughout the course of this shutdown, Democrats have refused to negotiate. At the same time, they also voted down measures that would have paid federal workers during the stalemate.

"The American people are not bargaining chips. The president has offered to reopen the government and ensure federal workers receive their pay while continuing his fight for adequate border security. It is my hope that Democrats have a change of heart, end their obstruction and come to the table to provide real solutions. The stakes could not be any higher."
